According to the Medicinenet article The Pilates "method," is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility, strength, and body awareness, without necessarily building bulk. Pilates method is a series of controlled movements performed on specially designed spring-resistant exercise apparatus (the Reformer, the Cadillac, the Spine Corrector, the Ladder Barrel, and the Wunda Chair) , and the sessions are supervised by specially trained instructors. Pilates is resistance exercise, not aerobic (cardio), although the heart rate will certainly rise for a deconditioned individual. 
The main purpose of pilates is to focus on muscle tone more than on building muscles. You can go to the gym or any studio that has a special equipment for pilates, make sure there is a licensed trainer, who can supervise you.

History of Pilates?

Pilates was developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates. The first people who were treated by Pilates exercises were soldiers and dancers, so this new method could help them  to heal their pains and to straighten the body.
The founder of this method Joseph Pilates brought it to the United States in 1923. This method of exercise became very popular in New York City by the 1960s and in Hollywood in the 1970s. Even today, the Pilates method remains true to its origins.

Different Types of Pilates

The Pilates method is separated into two different parts: using a mat or using special equipment. The special equipment for pilates is called apparatus, it is also separated by size, so the equipment  can be used in a studio or at home. 

Mat Exercises 

Mat that is used for pilates classes is not the same as a yoga mat, but technically you can use your yoga mat to practice pilates. Mats used for pilates exercises are thicker and larger, and have a slicker surface. If you are planning to attend the studio, you do not need to get your own mat, unless you want to. Most of the  pilates exercises are done on the mat but there are some that are done on the floor. 

Equipment Exercises 

The best known large equipment for pilates is the reformer. The other pilates equipment is called the tower, it is attached to the reformer at the pilates studio. There is another variation of tower equipment that can be attached to a door and used at home. There is another equipment called Cadillac, mostly used in private pilates classes, as it requires a lot of instructions and time for one person.  Small equipment is usually used during mat classes. 

How to Get Started?

If you are new to pilates it is better to start your training with an experienced and certified trainer. Ideally, one-to-one classes will be the best option for those who would like to get experience with Cadillac or Reformer equipment. Before your first class, we recommend watching some pilates videos to know better what to expect from the class. 
Once you have done some classes and know the technique of pilates, you can try to invest in your own home equipment to practice pilates at home. Most pilates classes are 45-60 min.

What to Wear to Pilates Class?

If it is your first Pilates class we would not recommend spending a lot of money on clothing to start until you know that you like this type of fitness. 

Leggings or Joggers

Leggings or any other sport pants should not be baggy. If you have an equipment pilates class it can be dangerous to workout in baggy activewear. Also, the trainer needs to see your body to check your movement during workout.
